February is the Second month in the 2010 calendar. The calendar grid is shown
above. In the United States, there is one federal holiday in the month –
Washington’s Birthday. This holiday is celebrated on the third Monday of
February, which is never George Washington’s actual birthday. The actual
date is February 22nd, but the Uniform Holidays Act of 1968 shifted the date to
always be celebrated on a Monday, allowing for an annual 3 day weekend. Some people
and calendars refer to the holiday as presidents day, but no law, act, or executive
order has ever changed the name of the holiday to Presidents day from Washington’s
birthday.
February is the shortest month of the year. There are typically only 28 days,
but every four years, a day is added to the calendar, giving February a 29th
day. The traditional birthstone for February is the amethyst. The birth flower
for January is the Iris, which symbolizes faith, wisdom and hope. February always
starts on the same day of the month as March and November unless it is a leap
year, in which case the month will start the same day as August. The month gets
its name from the Latin word februum, which means purification. The old Roman
calendar had a purification ritual in the middle of the month on February 15th.

Rosa Parks, Ronald Reagan, and Clark Gable Check the birthdays page, which has
